Hello it’s me Cara! I have been studying on the ancient Greek era at school and they have asked me to do a project on it so I thought it might be a good idea to put it on here and share it with all of you. I wanted to do my project zoomed on Gods and Goddesses. Especially about where the Gods and Goddesses lived, which was called Mount Olympus. For my project I did a model that was a temple on top of a hill (old shoe box upside down ) called Pathernon. In this post you will find out a bit about some of the gods and goddesses.

The Pathernon is the most famous temple in Greece and it is found in the city of Athens (the capital of Greece). It was built to honour the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. She was born from Zeus head. Did you know that Zeus was the king of the gods? And that he threw thunderbolts at people to punish them?

Facts about Mount Olympus:

Mount Olympus is the highest cliff in Greece. It is 9,570 feet tall. Mount Olympus is 2,664 km away from us (UK). It was believed that most of the gods lived in a palace above the Mount, in the clouds. Mount Olympus is located in the Olympus Range on the border with Macedonia.

Gods and Goddesses names and powers:

Zeus (god of the sky), Poseideon (god of the sea), Ares (god of war), Apollo (god of music, poetry and art), Hermes (god of trade), Hades (god of the underworld), Dionysus (god of wine), Cronus (god of time and ages), Hephaestus (god of fire), Aphrodite (goddess of love), Hera (goddess of marriage and women), Demeter (goddess of harvest), Athena (goddess of wisdom and war) and Artemis (goddess of the hunt).

A bit more about the gods:

Zeus was king of the gods and had many children including Apollo, Athena, Artemis, Aphrodite and Ares. His father was Cronus and his wife was Hera.

Hera was queen of the gods and her only child was Ares. She travelled in a chariot pulled by peacocks. She destroyed the city of Troy.

Poseidon was known for carrying a trident and was the brother of Zeus and Hades. He also had a chariot pulled by seahorses. He could send underwater earthquakes to destroy the land.

Hades had a three-headed dog called Cerberus who guarded the underworld gates. He did not have a chariot.

The people of Athens named their city after the goddess Athena. Athena’s animal was the wise owl. She gave the first olive tree to the people of Athens and they had a lot of money from selling olive oil.
